Wood mobile, 'Fairy Butterfly'

Wood mobile, 'Fairy Butterfly'

Buoyed by the artisan's abundant imagination and skill, Wayan Longsog offers a world of enchanted flying angels, animals, and mythical creatures. This beautiful fairy with butterfly wings and a gentle expression is carved from local albesia wood and represents one of the Balinese angels that are known to carry out heavenly deeds. A beautiful ceiling decoration which will turn in response to a breeze from an open window. Wings are detachable.

Wood mobile, 'Enchanted Angel'

Wood mobile, 'Enchanted Angel'

Master woodcarver Wayan Longsog sculpts an enchanting flying angel mobile from regional albesia wood. The dainty feminine figurine clad in traditional Balinese dress is one of God's creatures, believed to be his assistant in certain matters. The angels possess the gift of flight as well as other powers, such as invisibility, which they sometimes require to carry out their missions and God's purpose. A lovely Balinese accent to watch over any home setting - the piece is easily hung by its sturdy strings.

Hand-painted in fanciful colors, this cheerful monkey is all dressed up. Carved from crocodile wood and garbed in handloomed ikat cloth, the primate can be posed in a variety of positions, alone or on a base. Gusti Ngurah Semarajaya draws on the wealth of Balinese tradition to create an original and fanciful doll.

Wood doll, 'Legend'

Wood doll, 'Legend'

This beautiful doll bears a story on her lovely face. Gusti Ngurah Semarajaya paints a scene from the Calonarang, which tells the story of Rangda, mother of Erlangga who ruled Bali in the 10th century. Condemned for practicing black magic, she summoned evil spirits to fight Erlangga, and her powers were so strong, he was forced to ask Barong for aid. Eventually the evil Rangda was defeated. Semarajaya sculpts the elegant head, hands and feet from crocodile wood and dresses her in handloomed ikat cloth. The word means "to knot" in the Malaysian language, and the threads are tie-dyed before weaving. The doll can be posed in a variety of positions. Semarajaya suggests it can be displayed alone or on a base such as a drinking glass.

Cotton doll, 'Pochita'

Cotton doll, 'Pochita'

Dressed in black with a montera on her head, this lovely doll is set to celebrate one of Cuzco's myriad festivities. Norma Estrada recreates the gala costume with infinite detail, including the rich colors and patent embroidery for which Cuzco is known. Estrada crafts this doll with cotton and dressed her in wool. The montera is card covered in cloth, and finally Estrada hand-paints the doll's cheerful face. "Pochita" makes for an endearing addition to an international doll collection. Care instructions: The doll may be hand washed, except for the her hat, which is made of card.
