Japanese Ojime Rabbit Necklace : 19th Century : Neward Museum

Japanese Ojime Rabbit Necklace : 19th Century : Neward Museum
Japanese Ojime Rabbit adapted from a 19th century original in The Newark Museum, New Jersey. The Japanese take great pride in even the smallest details of the accoutrements of living. Their swordguards (menuki), seal and personal object containers (inro), fastening beads (ojime) and sash toggles (netsuke) are already familiar to many, as examples of the pleasure taken in craftsmanship and artistry in miniature. Ojime such as this, were used to fasten and tighten the cord holding inro cases or pouches for personal items, medicines or tobacco to the obi sash worn around the waist in traditional Japanese male attire. This tiny, amusing rabbit shows both the craftsmanship of the 19th century Japanese goldsmith, and a lively affectionate imagination in his handling of the subject.Sterling Silver Pendant (approx 1/2"" Diameter) with 18 inch chain

Medieval Labyrinth Necklace, Gothic 13th Century
The medieval Labyrinth of Rheims necklace. The ancient meditational device of walking the path of a labyrinth has been widely revived in recent years. Labyrinths appear in many cultures with ancient, medieval and modern examples. Unlike mazes, which are designed to confound, labyrinths have only one path: from beginning to end. Herein lies the allegory of life, or the progress of thought, the cleansing of the mind, the solution to a problem, or the search for meaning in being. Hence the Latin inscription, solvitur ambulando, it is solved by walking, a quotation ascribed to St Augustine. Of hundreds of labyrinths throughout the world, the design laid on the floor of the Cathedral of Rheims in central France is one of the most beautiful. Constructed in the high Gothic style from the early 13th to the 15th centuries, the labyrinth itself was laid out in the late 1200s. The octagonal shape commonly seen in the design of medieval church fonts, is itself a symbol of rebirth and renewal. Sterling Silver with 18 inch chain

Medieval Heart Necklace : Museum of London, 17th Century
Medieval heart necklace original in the collection of the Museum of London, dated to the late 17th century. On the face is engraved:I love the(e) and dare not shew it, if thou Love me then let me know it while the reverse is inscribed: Thy vertue move(s) my heart to love. English spelling and usage was inconsistent until the eighteenth century as well as the poetic licence of the engraver. Both the form of the engraving and the sentiment itself offers a charming elegance of thought and expression.Sterling Silver with 18 inch chain.

The Love We Give Away Is the Only Love We Keep Necklace

The Love We Give Away Is the Only Love We Keep Necklace
Heart shaped necklace inscribed ""The Love We Give Away Is the Only Love We Keep"". This softly shaped tactile pendant is in the form of a heart formed by a ribbon, a continuous circuit with no beginning and no end. It is engraved with a sentiment expressing the selflessness of love. The inscription is well suited to this open heart shape, being a representation of the idea that giving and receiving are one in the same. Examples of jewelry engraved with sentiments of love and friendship are known from the earliest civilizations of the ancient world, and remain popular to this day. Poesy rings, that is, rings bearing a short poem or inscription, were most popular in 16th and 17th century France and England, being frequently mentioned in the plays of Shakespeare.Sterling Silver with 18 inch chain.
